Heading to Dauphin Island, don’t know what to expect…

Big sky on Dauphin. All these photos were taken with that old reliable instamatic.

With any luck Labor Day weekend will find me on Dauphin Island. Amid all the reports of contamination I am a little skeptical at the possibility of swimming or wading or drinking the water. But, the island has been calling me for a couple months so off I will go.

The plan is to drive down and spend 3 nights, visit the mounds and relax. Oh yea, take scads of photos.

So, to that I say adieu, and look for great pictures when I get back!

THAT is a tree hugger! Mau next to the Mother Tree.

A Dauphin sunset.

Taken with an old instamatic, sunset on Dauphin Island late 1990's.

Mysterious pathways lead one on a journey through the mounds.

Could it be? Another sunset!

That's me in the foreground. My first self portrait. On the boardwalk at the southeast end of the island in the 90's. Looks like a little sand between my toes.

Thank you Laura. It’s amazing to me how many people I know who have ties to Dauphine.

I think you are going to find yourself pleasantly surprised with the conditions on Dauphin Island. The beaches are gorgeous and the nature trails are as welcoming as ever.

Glad to see you’re coming back on Labor Day!

I hope I find myself pleasantly surprised also! I’ve been there dozens of times, since 95, but not for a couple years. There has been so much extreme info in the media, on both ends of the spectrum (since the spill), I’m looking forward to seeing for myself.

Thanks for the input. AND this blog surely needs some attention OR I need to be traveling more!

I found you on my facebook and loved watching your Dauphin Island pictures. We have been going every year the last 10 years and made a reservation for next year even though the oil spill happened. It sounds like that things are Ok. You read so much in the news and I have heard about the effect of the dispersement chemicals they used and that it is still acting on the internal organs of fish, wild life and potentially people too. Your trip is encouraging to go ahead and go next March, like we planned.
What a wonderful trip. Blessings and joy to you,
    Madhuriima

    Madhuriima,

I believe we have met before, in fact once on Dauphin Island. I am a friend of Marideth.

The island was very beautiful this visit. Their were a lot of fish to be seen in the shallow waters and a lot of bird life. Yes I think the dispersants are less than a good thing… but which is worse… the oil in the Gulf waters or the dispersants to clean it up…A very big question. I am sure there will be far reaching consequences. In the meantime we all have to do the best job we can of our own health and that of our immediate surroundings.

I refuse to live in fear of what has happened there, but I was prepared to leave if the atmosphere felt wrong. Of course we can not be aware of everything, just do our best.

Thank you for finding this blog… it sure needs a lot of work! And I hope you enjoyed the new photos I posted about my trip last weekend!

Dear Sarah, I have soo curious about the new changes in you life. It sounds like you have become a manager for a bed and breakfast in Springfield or West Plains or somewhere. Can’t wait to hear the story. I love you blog site. The tales of you travels on the pipeline are just how I remembering hearing out them. You were my link to the world of adventure.
